Family Ties Statement
I begin with tiny snapshots. I like that the painting begins on paper—slightly
wrinkled, worn, and transitory. The snapshots are from my family’s archives
of photographs over the past 100 years, portraits of people that I sense have
touched my life somewhere, somehow, however momentarily. Six degrees
of separation. Less.

The pixels are the portals through which I access the stories inside the snaps.
And as one imagines a snap shot ‘freezing’ the moment, I unfreeze it and
open it to interpretation through the intuition I have, the mediums I use,
through heart and soul. Through art.

"From Sketch to Final Painting"

Picture

Most of my paintings begin as a series of small sketches.  For the most part I sketch from photos I take with my IPhone at home or when I travel. When I sketch, I am looking for the movement of the scene, how the people and the surrounding area work together.  I manipulate and combine my iPhone images to capture a composition that provokes conversation between the viewer and the painting. My goal is to actively engage the viewer in each piece. “What is happening here? What is the atmosphere?  Can you hear the sounds, smell the aromas? What are those shadows? Who is going where, and why?”

I begin with a pen working fast to capture the action in the sketch with no editing or erasing allowed. Every mark is important.  Shadows dancing, the spaces between people and shapes guide my pen. In my larger final paintings, I add and subtract elements from the sketches that contribute to the larger format, building the composition almost like a collage as I paint.

I think of my work as an “abstraction” of reality. I am interested in the interaction of the shapes and forms taken from real life, but abstracted to fit my particular vision of the world.

The flow of land and figure gives expression to the wonder of life. What I see with my eyes is just the half of it. What I paint is the other half.

New Artist Chris Flisher!

Chris Flisher has been creating spiritually-realized drawings for years.  The inspiration for the artwork sprang initially from his love of astrology.  Astrology uses circles and cycles to represent the changing universe.  As the planets drift through the cosmos; as the seasons change; as the days come and go; the universe evolves and expands in a timeless swirl of circular motion.  As above, so below.  The very essence of the circle is at the core of our DNA and the patterns of nature, time, and space.

The drawings evolve from the subconscious and are created in a stream of consciousness involving concentration and meditation.  All designs, patterns, and symbols are original and one of a kind.  The swirl of color, textures, and spiritual symbolism are all part of the process.  Although these are not typical paintings, they evolve from the same spiritual center and are offered to the universe for the collective good of all.

Chris is also the host of the weekly radio talk show, "Turning Of The Wheel," on Contact Talk Radio.  Incorporating astrology, art, and spiritual adventure, the shows provide a lively forum for exploring non-traditional methods for coping.  They are a very popular download podcast from iTunes.  The show has aired for five consecutive years.  His book, "Mandalas ~ Spirit In Art" is a popular addition at several museum bookstores in New York and New England.

In addition, Chris regularly teaches classes on art, astrology, and healing.  His work has appeared in several galleries throughout the northeast and Europe.  He has been the subject of radio talk shows, newspaper and magazine articles and has appeared on national television.

Chris is an avid writer and has written for numerous music publications.  He is a published poet and has an on-going astrology practice.
